Horror story with hope
As this planet undergoes one of six great extinction crises in history, Australian logging is identified as a causal factor. With 1071 native species, populations and ecological communities in NSW listed as threatened with extinction it is vital you are aware of, and act on the knowledge that: Trees are being cut as fast as possible in NSW native coastal and hinterland forests (whether or not they are even sold) and logging operational objectives include: See the full pdf report:
Kerewong Audit
Report of logging operations in the Lower North East Forest Agreement Region of NSW
The concerned citizen feels that she/he is witnessing a crime against civilised or legal society, in particular, but more alarmingly, potentially fatal crimes against precarious biodiversity, in general. It is an indictment of this society that government is condoning this environmental vandalism with what we collectively now know about impacting on earth’s processes, and of the peril our natural systems are in. That this is apparently carried out now with impunity, on most occasions, on such a scale, all the time, discredits the NSW government and the federal government, for the latter are also responsible for this RFA process permitting this environmental slaughter, and both governments whoever is in power, will remain responsible as long as this situation is allowed to persist. Big timber not quite out of the woods
The Australian February 19, 2011 (extract).
"Peter Mitchell, general manager of the Eden woodchip mill would get out his chainsaw and cut off the legs of a 6m-high tripod made by protesters from forest saplings and used as a roadblock to stop logging trucks entering his Japanese-owned mill. It proved a crowd-pleaser for frustrated logging truck drivers and a final insult for the self-styled "green police" such as Lisa, Sooty, Adrian, Tony, Lucy and Jack the Hammer, doing their best for the trees. But after this year's so-called "summer slam" to protest against destruction of the forests of southeast NSW and northeast Victoria, Mitchell has put away his chainsaw and says he won't be doing it again. "I was revving the chainsaw and this young woman had her arms wrapped tightly around the leg of the tripod, the blade was inches from her face and she was not going to let go," Mitchell says. "I thought, hold on a minute, what am I doing?"

New report calls on Forests NSW to be dis-accredited
The North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) seeks de-accreditation of Forests NSW by bodies that certify north coast wood as sourced by legal and sustainable logging practice. According to NEFA to continue accreditation of Forests NSW would be to discredit Australia’s certification system and to threaten to bring all accredited Australian wood products into disrepute. Forests NSW fines ‘inadequate’
He said the fines of $1200 and a warning letter related to Forests NSW’s “illegal, systematic and repeated breaches of the Threatened Species Licence”. “These are grossly inadequate penalties for trashing of 1.7 ha of rainforest, trashing two wetlands, the apparent cutting down of over a 100 feed trees that were required to be retained for threatened species, and the likely killing of many yellow-bellied gliders and Richmond Range frogs, amongst other threatened species,” ...

Camden Haven Courier - Letter to the Editor
Closer to home, the Forests NSW Agency is about to destroy itself, causing plenty of collateral damage along the way.
Forests NSW is yet another Government Agency headed by a foreign CEO and change agent.
The inevitable restructure will see the predictable avalanche of job losses based on flatulence or blemished assumptions about how the place operates, all fuelled by a bonus for the Chief, when numbers are reduced.
This time the emphasis is on flicking the hands-on 'doers' in the organisation, including the Fire Fighters and Plant Operators, not to mention the ongoing attrition of genuine Foresters...
Kendal Chronicle - Letter to the Editor
I am writing to inform you of an environmental emergency occurring now in the Camden Haven region. In recent years I have watched with increasing alarm the number of Camphor Laurel seedlings inundating the tracks through Kerewong State Forest, as light regimes are altered deliberately as an experimental forestry practice...
Logging in Mumbulla State Forest
It was agreed that the loggers would not cut down trees within 100m of agreed points of sacred interest within the compartment currently being logged in Mumbulla State Forest. However, to the great distress of the community seeking protection for the forest, loggers have in fact broken that agreement and logged closer to sacred areas...
